Here’s six reasons that I LOVE thrift store shopping at Deseret Industries and why you should, too!

KIDS GROW FAST! I swear that it wasn’t long ago that Lily was this size.

I blinked my eyes and now Lily is almost 10!

PS – Both of those outfits are second-hand. I’m a long time thrifter!

All three of my children inherited their Daddy’s height so they never stay in one size for long. It’s not uncommon for me to buy shoes online and have them arrive already too small. Thus, I am a deal shopper! Clearance racks, outlet sales, yard sales, and my favorite this year – Deseret Industries! I can score new or almost new clothes for $1-$5. Makes me not feel as bad when they outgrew them so quickly!

I CAN DONATE AND GIVE BACK! We fill up bags to donate to Deseret Industries at least once a month. From toys to furniture to clothes, it’s nice to be able to give things we are done with a second life with someone else. I love that what I donate helps with humanitarian worldwide and local needs

HELPS THE COMMUNITY. When I toured the Springville DI earlier this month, I was touched by the stories of those who had been helped by Deseret Industries.  Now only do individuals gain retail experience, but they also receive career and technical education. Through Deseret Industries, many are able to get back on their feet and provide for their families.  The Springville DI will provide 100+ jobs to those in the community. That’s a win-win! Every employee I came into contact with during the grand opening was so kind and helpful.

THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE. It’s like a treasure hunt at Deseret Industries – you never know what you are going to get! I went to the grand opening with maternity clothes on my mind, but came away with bags and bags of $1 baby girl clothing. Many still new with tags!

I love that both of my little boys costumes are perfect for Utah Halloweens. I hate having to cover up their cute costumes with coats. They’ll be warm and cozy in their full body suits this year.

So how do I do it without pulling my hair out and cancelling everything on my calendar? I make sure that I have all of our favorite on the go potty training essentials. We have a camping trip coming up that normally I would dread in the midst of potty training. No fear this time – I’ve stocked up on all our favorite products and potty training equipment for the road! Here’s a peak at what I have packed!

1. Pull-Ups from Family Dollar – Undies are fine for at home, but during the first month when we are on the go – I’m not taking any chances! Pull ups can get expensive so I am happy when I can find them for a good deal. I found these Jake and the Neverland Pirate Pull-Ups on sale at Family Dollar this week! 2. 2-in-1 potty training chair – This chair has been a lifesaver more than once. We keep it in the back of our van with a big supply of grocery bags. We try to hustle to the rest room as much as possible, but this has come in handy several times.I love that it doubles as a potty chair as well as a potty seat for the toilet.               
3. Potty Time Potty Watch – Toddlers get WAY TOO distracted on vacation and so do mom and dad. This watch keeps both of us reminded!
4. It’s Time to Potty App – Of course there is a potty training app! Downloading this for the reminders and fun games as well!
5. Ziplocs and a positive attitude. Accidents happen just like our good friend Elmo says. (PS- My kids all loved this Sesame Street Potty Training DVD. Might not be a bad idea to pop it in the DVD player on long car trips.)  Be sure to travel with ziplocs and wet wipes for any accidents. Be sure to stay as positive as you can! Oh man do I know it is hard when you catch a whiff of a smell that should not be coming from your potty trained child!

Potty training has been so much easier the third time around! Waiting until he was ready and then making sure we had all the essentials on hand has made all the difference.

New pencils, crayons, paper products, tissues – I love Back to School shopping! But if I have all three of my cuties with me – it’s got to be fast. I am so lucky that a new Wal-mart was built right after we moved to Spanish Fork – it’s the easiest for picking up everything I need for back to school. Plus I am a big fan of the Wal-mart Savings Catcher app and price matching policy. It saves us lots of money!

Here’s a few tips that help me keep my sanity during Back to School shopping.

1. Stock Up! Sale prices for back to school items are the best this time of year. Everything from crayons to Kleenex at Wal-mart are on sale. I have a shelf in my kitchen with all the gluesticks and art supplies.

2. Prep for Parties! Last year I was a room mom and I wish that I would have bought more supplies for school parties at the beginning of the year. Inevitably, something comes up and parents forget to send in supplies. With class parties come class messes so be sure to pick up Viva paper towels at Wal-mart!

One of my favorite supplies for parties – Scott Extra Soft at Wal-mart! Toilet paper is seriously a life-saver for games. We’ve done toilet paper bowling and my personal favorite – Minute to Win it Wrapping. For Halloween, the kids can wrap each other up like mummies. For Christmas – make it a Christmas tree with ornaments! For Valentines – wrap them up and tape on hearts.

3. Be Ready for Sick Days. School is back in session and that means germs are, too! I hate starting cold season without my favorite soft tissues so I stock up on Kleenex at Wal-mart.  Grab some Bear Creek Soup packets (just add water) and saltines and you are set for flu season.

4. Price Match. Be sure you have the Wal-mart Savings Catcher App and price match at Wal-mart. It’s nice knowing that you are getting the best deals!

5. Buy Double for Home. Make sure you are stocked up for home and for school! This year I am organizing my supplies in a rolling cart with individual containers so that my kids can easily access what they need and don’t have to go looking for it. All the extras will go up in the kitchen cupboard.

6. Give back. We are serious Box Tops for Education collectors at our house. We even recruit grandparents and aunts/uncles to clip them for us. The best thing abut buying in bulk at Wal-mart is the high-value Box Tops.

3.  The Iconic Electrical Light Parade. Disney is bringing back the famous nighttime parade with a new twist – the Paint the Night Parade. I adored this parade as a child and took my youngest to see it before it left California Adventure in 2010. Thrilled that it is back with some of children’s favorite Disney and Pixar characters from Monster’s Inc, Toy Story, and Cars!

4. Dazzling Diamond Celebration updates to World of Color. Look for some new adaptions to the California Adventure World of Color as part of the celebration. I’m thinking I need one of those magical hats that coordinate with the show as well!

5. Upgraded Attractions – Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan, and the Matterhorn. Long-time Disney fans are most excited for the return of the Hat Box Ghost to Haunted Mansion. This classic ghostly ghoul was only in the Haunted Mansion for a year and will be returning after a 45 year absence. The Matterhorn Bobsleds have been closed since January and are set to reopen in May. Rumor has it there may be a revamped abominable snowman! Be on the lookout for some reimagining on the iconic setpieces of Peter Pan’s Flight as well.

6. Discounted Disneyland Resort Tickets – up to $18 per ticket off.  I’m always on the look out for Disney deals! Thrift store shopping and I go way back. One of my favorite stops in Edinburgh, Scotland? A thrift store where I found an amazing formal and leather jacket for mere pennies (or pounds as they would say in the UK!) Browsing the racks and coming across a treasure that you just know you need for your closet is so much fun. I am excited to introduce you to the newest thrift store in Utah Valley where I know you will discover as many fabulous finds as I did!

Earlier this week I got a sneak peek of Tag’s. Now ladies, this isn’t just any thrift store. It is thrift store elevated! It’s the thrift store’s cool older sister. The grand opening is tomorrow (September 18th) at 9 am and guess who will be there – Waffle Luv! I am going to tell you all about what to expect at this store, but first I want to share some of my finds!

When I go thrift store shopping, I am looking for staples for my wardrobe as well as fun statement pieces. I found this Land’s End sweater in the top left corner for $6.99. Looks like new! Definitely something I had to have for fall fashion layering! My sister from Live to be Inspired helped me style it. Imagine the possibilities! You can go casual with a scarf and boots; dressy with a charcoal pencil skirt, silk top, and incredible jewelry; or you can chic it up for a girls night out like in the top right corner. Love finding affordable, classic pieces that will work well with so many outfits!

The second piece I found was this flowy number from Jaclyn Smith for $4.99. What a fun and crazy animal print in a great stretchy fabric. Have I mentioned it is incredibly comfortable? This is definitely a statement shirt! Not for the shrinking violet. The great things about thrift stores is that you can love it and/or leave it. At $4.99, I am not out a lot of money if I get home and decide I don’t like it. In fact, I can take it back six months later and donate the proceeds to my favorite charity. Win/win.

P.S. Are those shoes not to die for?!?!

These are just two of the fun pieces that I discovered at Tag’s. My  blogger friends and I found so many ready to wear pieces as well as Project Runway renovate it and make it work pieces. There’s truly something for everyone! Now let me tell you a little more about this fun place.

Besides the fresh and current selection of clothes, what I loved most about Tag’s is the causes they support. Hearing the owners talk about the Feed the World program touched my heart. Helping feed families in need and teaching them more sustainable farming practices is definitely a cause I can get behind. When we moved into our new home this year, my Pinterest boards exploded with ideas for a bathroom remodel. The master bathroom has carpet for heavens sake. It is begging for a remodel!

But a complete remodel just isn’t in the budget after all the pricey move-in expenses and our dream Disney vacation in May. What’s a girl to do? I’ll just have to settle for some luxury bathroom routines in my blah blah bathroom for now! Just because my bathroom is looking boring doesn’t mine I have to feel that way!

Here’s what is on the agenda when my sweet children aren’t attempting to bust in or sticking their darling little pudgy fingers under the door.

1. A bubble bath with indulgent soaps. Ten minutes in hot water bliss – yes, please! Just long enough to make me forget about the carpeted bathroom for a few moments.

2. A few of my favorite things and scents. Love burning my candle that I bought at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. So calming and brings back wonderful memories. Nothing like European memories to help you feel luxurious!

3. Speaking of Europe … no bidet, no problem. I first discovered flushable cleansing cloths when I was potty training my oldest. So much easier. Secretly wished here was a more sophisticated version for adults, too. Thanks Cottonelle for granting my wish. Flushable and great for the whole family.

4. I also try to stock the master bathroom with the softer stuff. After giving birth to three babies and then raising those three babies, sometimes you just need to splurge on the nice toilet paper. Pass the two-ply please. After wiping my children’s bums all day, I think I’ve earned the ultimate in clean for myself. Why shouldn’t I feel as fresh as they do, right?
