“There’s something within each of the stories of Tangled, The Princess and the Frog,Cinderella, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that speaks to women and girls and families around the world,” says Producer Nicole Feld. “Each of these princesses is searching for what truly makes them happy. And I think that’s very reflective of what audiences are like today.”

My daughter was completely taken with Rapunzel’s aerial routines as was I. Simply magical! During the finale, Lily oohed and ahhed over the princess’s ball gowns as they welcomed Rapunzel to the magical court. The cameo appearances of all the Disney princesses was a treat.

The costuming details won me over. From Cinderella’s sparkling skates to Snow White’s classic silhouette, I was in love with the costuming. Just the right amount of DIsney glitter and glamour.

Lest you think Dare to Dream catered only to the girls, my 6 and 4 year old boys loved it as well. My four year old is still giggling about the antics of the larger than life Maximus, the horse. My oldest boy surprised me by declaring the Snow White forest scene as is favorite. From the spooky trees to the creatures he insists were dragons, it captivated his six year old attention.

3.  The Iconic Electrical Light Parade. Disney is bringing back the famous nighttime parade with a new twist – the Paint the Night Parade. I adored this parade as a child and took my youngest to see it before it left California Adventure in 2010. Thrilled that it is back with some of children’s favorite Disney and Pixar characters from Monster’s Inc, Toy Story, and Cars!

4. Dazzling Diamond Celebration updates to World of Color. Look for some new adaptions to the California Adventure World of Color as part of the celebration. I’m thinking I need one of those magical hats that coordinate with the show as well!

5. Upgraded Attractions – Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan, and the Matterhorn. Long-time Disney fans are most excited for the return of the Hat Box Ghost to Haunted Mansion. This classic ghostly ghoul was only in the Haunted Mansion for a year and will be returning after a 45 year absence. The Matterhorn Bobsleds have been closed since January and are set to reopen in May. Rumor has it there may be a revamped abominable snowman! Be on the lookout for some reimagining on the iconic setpieces of Peter Pan’s Flight as well.

6. Discounted Disneyland Resort Tickets – up to $18 per ticket off.  I’m always on the look out for Disney deals! The Easter bunny came early to the Parker house and, as you can tell from Lily’s picture, the kids were pretty excited. When a lovely little package from Walt Disney Records arrived on my door step last week, I knew the four latest CDs from Disney Music Emporium would be the first thing I packed for our road trip. Thus these CDs became the first early addition to our Easter baskets!

Growing up, I have so many memories of listening to Disney cassettes in the car with my family on road trips. Love that I now have Into the Woods, Frozen, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Disney Junior DJ Shuffle 2 for our collection! Get your family read to hop into spring with these fun collections! Tara’s Favorite

I’ve been ever so patiently waiting for this musical to come out on DVD (March 24 – it’s out NOW!) so Into the Woods was my clear favorite of the four CDs. Perfect to listen to while I waited for the movie to come out!  Musicals have had a special place in my heart since my high school drama days. The story telling, the orchestra, the unforgettable lyrics and performances – I love them all. I’ll admit to you that I’ve had Meryl Streep’s voice in my head singing “Greens, greens, nothing but greens” every morning as I’ve made my green smoothie this week.

John’s Favorite

This ultimate mix tape CD from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy made it to the top of my husband’s list. Personally loved the cover and the role the mix played in the movie as a gift from the main character’s mother on her death bed. Songs that got the thumbs up from the Parkers included Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede, I Want You Back by Jackson 5, and Come and Get Your Love by Redbone. So many memorable hits! My children begged to listen to Hooked on a Feeling on repeat during our road trip and I happily obliged.

7 year old Lily’s Favorite

Pretty safe to say that most little girls would be THRILLED to find a Frozen DVD and soundtrack in their Easter basket. This CD was the first Lily requested (aka begged) to listen to in the car. Frozen had the most sing alongs and we may have belted Let it Go and Do You Wanna Build a Snow Man? a time or two. Adore the vocal talents of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, and Santino Fontana. My new favorite is the quirky Fixer Upper – there are some great one liners in there!

5 year old Cort’s and 3 year old Kyler’s Favorite

My little boys thought that the Disney Junior DJ Shuffle 2 was fun, fun, fun, fun! Everyone in the car couldn’t help but sing along with that line from the first song. This collection of songs from all their favorite Disney Junior shows was definitely a crowd pleaser with the littles. Two by Two and Believe in Your Dreams from Sofia the First were most often requested by Lily for repeats on this CD. The boys giggled every time during the Captain Hook Destroy the Book song from Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Definitely a fun CD for your collection and a great listen for the car.

Disney’s Cinderella is opening in theaters this weekend and is sure to enchant and inspire. While I was swept up in the exquisite gowns and stunning scenery, a single quote was etched into my mind after screening Cinderella earlier this week.

“Have courage and be kind.

Where there is kindness there is a goodness,

and where there is goodness there is magic.”

Variations of this phrase echo throughout the movie reminding us that good can triumph over evil. Actress Lily James (who also plays Lady Rose in Downton Abbey) brought to life a sweet, but strong Cinderella. Possibly my favorite Cinderella to date. While staying fairly true to the traditional story line with a few creative twists, Disney elects this time to portray Cinderella less as a damsel in distress and more as an active player in her own fate. The conversation Cinderella has in the village with a former servant as well as the conversation with her stepmother in the attic show us the strength and conviction that her character possesses. As a mother (and a woman), I love this and how it models having strength in our sorrow and in our struggles.

Lily James is accompanied by a talented cast including Cate Blanchett as the step mother, Lady Tremaine, Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother, and Richard Madden as Prince Charming. The twist of Cinderella and Prince Charming initially meeting as supposed equals adds to the strength of both characters. Enjoy this sneak peek into their meeting.

The intricate details of the set design and the gorgeous setting provided the perfect backdrop for Cinderella. The movie was filmed throughout England in similar locations to Maleficent and Pirates of the Caribbean. Three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell is the woman behind the elaborate costumes for the film. Cinderella’s breathtaking ball gown was made from more than a dozen fine layers of fabric meant to appear as if she were floating. My favorite touch was the butterflies on the bodice as well as the shoes that paid homage to Cinderella’s relationship with her mother. Catch a peek at the gorgeous butterflies in the official trailer if you haven’t seen it yet.

My family adored the movie from my three year old on up to my husband. The antics of the mice, lizards, and goose had my five year old son giggling and my daughter was wide eyed at the ballroom scene. I’ve heard her humming “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and I’ve had to sneak that Cinderella dress into the wash while she is sleeping so she can wear it every day. The soundtrack for Cinderella is already available on Amazon.com and iTunes.

As an added bonus, theater goers are treated to Pixar’s brand new short film Frozen Fever. This crowd favorite had our entire auditorium laughing and wanting more. We are in luck because Disney just announced today that Frozen 2 is in the works! Here’s a quick glimpse of what you can expect from Frozen Fever.

From the enchanting backdrops to the endearing and timeless characters, you will not want to miss Cinderella and Frozen Fever this weekend. Whether it is girl’s night, time to snuggle up with a date, or the perfect excuse to take your family out, catch it in your local theaters and let me know what you think!

Magical. Silly. Special. Funny. Memorable. That’s how my family describes Disney on Ice – Let’s Celebrate. Celebrating holidays with over 50 of their favorite characters had all three of my children on the edge of their seats the entire show. I had to divide my attention between the magic/special effects happening on the ice and the  faces of my little ones who were absolutely enthralled.

“At the beginning we invite everyone to ‘Be Our Guest,” and we want the audience to experience what we experience on the ice – they’ll feel like they went trick or treating with Mickey and spent Valentine’s Day with the Disney Princesses,” said director Patricia Vincent.

Each member of my family had a difference favorite scene; although, the favorites changed the next day. The show was that good!

My youngest adored the silly antics of the Mad Hatter and Mickey Mouse during the UnBirthday Party. He is still talking and giggling about the hat chase.

My five year old’s eyes lit up every time Jack Skellington’s doorbell rang and another spooky villain arrived to trick or treat.

The fan dance that welcomed in the cherry blossoms and spring was first place in my daughter’s heart as you can tell from this instagram post.

The couples work and lifts by the Disney Princes and Princesses are always what catch my eye the most.

My husband love the in synch tribute to Fantasia with Sorcerer Mickey.

But my absolute favorite part? Seeing these faces when they saw their favorites!

Disney on Ice – Let’s Celebrate runs through this weekend until March 8th so there is still time for your children to see their favorite characters.

The snow is coming down in Utah and my seven year old princess is so excited to go to Disney on Ice at the Energy Solutions Area! Time to snuggle up with some hot chocolate and get a sneak peek of the fun that awaits us.

While the children check out the preview, I’ll be packing up and laying out costumes for tonight. My little ones look for every excuse to wear their Disney outfits! Lily will be wearing her new Ice Queen dress from Little Adventures and the boys are wearing their Buzz and Woody shirts from the Disney Store.

The Buzz and Woody shirts came as part of pajama sets, but I think they work perfectly with jeans. When you shop at the Disney Store be sure to go through a cash back site to get the best deal! Over Christmas I shopped at the Disney Store through my Ebates link and it was nice to get some money back. I also check Swagbucks and Shop at Home to see who is giving back the highest amount. May as well make money  back if you are already shopping at the Disney Store online!

Other items I am packing are:

Disposable Bibs to protect their costumes through dinner and any snacks at the venue. We bought this brand for our Florida trip and they have protected us from many a Mickey Mouse popsicle and Disney treat!

Toy Story Look and Find book for the boys. We have several of these books and they are great for during dinner and while we are waiting for the show to start.

Glow Sticks. We got ours at the dollar store, but you can also get them in bulk on Amazon.com. Then you will be set for the 4th of July, any Disney trips, and lots of summer fun!

Raise your hand if your child dresses like a Disney character several times a week. At our house, Lily rotates through Elsa, Rapunzel, Belle, Cinderella, and then back again. The moment she heard we were going to Disney on Ice, Lily began planning what she was going to wear. When we went last year, the the Energy Solutions Arena was filled with little princesses and Mickey Mouses.

On to the costumes!

Your little Tiana will love this Lily Pad princess dress-up set. My boys have been giggling about this Plush Frog Hat – One Size, too. In these ensembles they will be set to have fun at the Mardi Gras with Tiana and Naveen.

Little Adventures does not have an Alice in Wonderland costume on Amazon, but I did find this darling one that is machine washable.

It is no secret that we are Disney fans. From the theme parks, to the movies, to the merchandise – this family loves it all! Ever since our Walt Disney World vacation in May, my three year old has been asking, “When we going back to Disney Junior Land?”

Our next Disney vacation is still in the works and TBA so we’ve had to content ourselves with listening to our favorite Disney CDs. We were so excited to review Walt Disney Records’ newly created line of collectible CDs, the Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection.

The Legacy Collection features the beloved original soundtracks from each of the movies, plus valuable documentary content that tells the story behind the music. Each album features newly created artwork from Lorelay Bove, a visual development artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios (“Tangled,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “Wreck-It Ralph”). The artwork is beautiful and my daughter loved that each CD has a book-like appearance.

As we listened to the CDs on a recent road trip, the music took me back to my childhood and the many subsequent cherished Disney memories. Each member of my family has a clear favorite song from the three CDs we reviewed. Here are some of them:

My three year old’s favorite is Just Can’t Wait to be King from The Lion King: The Legacy Collection. I must admit that it gets me singing along, too.

My five year old has a surprise favorite – Scar’s Be Prepared! We’ve listened to that song on repeat the past few days. It’s almost a given that my son is going to shout out, “#8 please mom!” the second we get in the car. Sung by Jeremy Irons, Cheech Marin, Jim Cummings (who took over after Irons’s voice gave out), and Whoopi Goldberg, this song’s lyrics are even wittier than I remember as a child. Disney’s song writers are incredible at writing extra meaning into the songs – I loved the double meaning for pride in this song. So smart!

Listening to the The Lion King also gets me excited for seeing the Festival of the Lion King in the brand new Harambe Theater. It was being remodeled during our visit to the Wild Animal Kingdom so my kids haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Definitely on our Disney bucket list!

It was definitely not a surprise that my daughter loved the Sleeping Beauty sound track best. She said it reminded her of her time at the Bippity Boppity Boutique. Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in my heart, too, and reminded me of all the classic Disney movies and rides in Fantasy Land. The orchestral scores are beautiful and  I dare you not to slip into a waltz during Once Upon a Dream.

For myself, I have a hard time choosing between Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins with Dick van Dyke and Circle of Life. So many good iconic songs. If you want to get a sneak peek into the making of the Circle of Life scene and music – you have got to check out this video from Disney Insider!

So far only The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, and Mary Poppins have been released in The Legacy Collection. The Little Mermaid will be released on 11/17/14 with the rest of The Legacy Collection 2015 as follows:

One of my favorite items to find for our Walt Disney World vacation was a princess dress for my daughter Lily. You simply cannot go to Disney without a princess dress! I made Lily a reservation at the Bippity Boppity Boutique so that she could get the full Princess experience. Lily talked about becoming a princess for months so I was so excited when I found this Deluxe Rapunzel Dress by Little Adventures.

Here are some things I kept in mind when I was looking for a costume for Lily:

1. Florida is H-O-T. You want a costume in a breathable material. Lily’s cousins changed out of their costumes because of the heat, but Lily was able to stay in hers all day. Part of the fun of the fun of doing Bippity Boppity Boutique is being a princess all over the parks! Cast members addressed her as princess the entire day which she absolutely loved.

2. Disney World is full of sticky, messy treats. Having a costume that is machine washable is crucial when you are up against chocolate-dipped Mickey. I loved not having to worry about Lily’s dress being ruined forever at meal times. I did come prepared with bibs and a Tide stain stick, but I had peace of mind knowing I could run it down to the Art of Animation laundromat at the end of the day.

3. Your child is going non-stop all day. Your little girl will be dancing in parades, climbing in Dumbo’s play land, and running all over the parks. Her costume needs fit well and stay on! My daughter has some $10 Princess outfits that are fun for dress up at home, but are not ideal for the parks because of the velcro. You do not want to be doing up velcro all day! Believe me! The costumes from Mom Approved have no buttons or tie. Just slip easily right over the head!

4, Get the most bang for your buck. The dress Lily selected was on par as far as cost with the ones online at Disney.com. However, I love the material and look of hers much more! I’ve been a fan of the brand Mom Approved Costumes uses for years. Lily was able to wear her first Rapunzel dress until she grew out of it with no tearing or seams coming undone. Mom Approved Costumes does have several more affordable, but still high quality dresses that will save you money compared to the boutique prices.

5. Make sure it is comfortable.  If you are anything like my family, you open the parks and close them down at night. An itchy underskirt is not going to be fun after the first hour! The dress has to be in a soft, stretchy material that allows your princess to run, jump, and twirl to her heart’s content in the Florida heat. We made a huge mistake on the shoes we bought for our daughter – don’t make that same mistake. Keep your princess comfy and happy!

6. Guaranteed Princess satisfaction. With the Bippity Boppity Boutique there are no guarantees on selection and sizes. Your daughter may have her heart set on Elsa and Anna, but they may not be in stock! Buying a dress before hand guarantees that your princess has the dress she desires. It is also easier to match the accessories before hand as well.

Now mamas, Halloween is NEXT MONTH so now is the time to get those Anna and Elsa dresses before they sell out! Mom-Approved Costumes is also fully stocked with Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Merida, and all your other favorite princesses, too.

And don’t forget about your little men! How darling is this Prince Charming suit?

My heart sunk. Despite being warned repeatedly, I wasn’t prepared. I looked down at my three little ones – ages 4, 2, and 9 months – who depended on me for everything and quickly decided that we were going to do the earthquake drill another day. Pushing away the uncomfortable guilt, I began planning family meetings about emergency meeting points when a single thought stopped me in my tracks.

You don’t get a redo when a natural disaster happens.

At that moment, I knew that we had to do the Great Shake Out drill immediately. A real earthquake would not give me advance notice and then reschedule for a more convenient day. I turned up the radio so we could hear the emergency signal and let the reality of the drill sink in. I swooped up my baby and alerted my children to the sound of the signal. I had learned as a child what to do during an earthquake and now it was time to teach my little ones.

Drop. Cover. Hold On.

We huddled together under our dining room table and sang children’s songs until the signal ended. So far so good.

I gave myself a pat on the back for knowing what to do with my children for the initial earthquake, but then the reality of the aftermath set in.

72 hour kits

I easily found our 72-hour kits in the closet by the door. Pulling them out of the closet, I discovered a problem. Three small children, two large dufflebag 72-hour kits, and one mom meant we wouldn’t be getting very far. If our home was unsafe, I would have a major problem getting everything and everyone to safety. 

If I hadn’t done the drill, I may not have made the obvious connection. Since then we have converted our 72-hour kits to backpacks, including back packs that the children can wear.

This experience opened my eyes to the reality of what could actually happen. I realized being prepared was more than having a 72-hour kit on hand. It was knowing what to do, where to go, how to help my children, etc. Here are five emergency preparedness tips that I hope will help families with small children.

1. Practice. Practice. Practice. Participate in your state’s Great Shake Out every April.  Have mini-drills with your children so that drop, cover, and hold on is ingrained in their minds!

2. Choose an area of preparedness to focus on every month. For example, purchase and fill your water barrels one month. The next month, put together kits for your car and work. Involve your children in the preparation.

3. Talk to your children about natural disasters and emergency preparedness in age-appropriate terms. The goal is to prepare, not scare! The Red Cross and Disney have put together a fun Disaster Preparedness Activity Book that you can print out and do with your children.

4. Be prepared with identification. Make a key ring with a current picture of each member of your family on it. They are so easy – click on the link to make your own! Be sure to make one for each member of your family! Have a sharpie in each of your 72-hour kits as well so that you can write your names and emergency contact info on your arm in case you are separated.

5. Rotate your 72-hour kits every six months.  I rotate my 72 hour kits every April and October in between General Conference sessions.

With September being National Preparedness month and all the flooding in Arizona and reports of the unprecedented respiratory virus – I am definitely working on preparing my family better.
