5 minutes for mom hosts a fun link up every week called Tackle it Tuesday and I am joining in. I am hoping it will be a good way for me to tackle some household projects I have been procrastinating and hold myself accountable.

Cloth Wet Wipes are something I have been researching, but putting off for a long time. Before my first baby was born, my mother in law told me how my some of my sister in laws made their own wet wipes out of a homemade solution and a paper towel roll cut in half. Intriguing, but again, I never got around to it and Costco wipes seemed a pretty good deal at .02 a wipe!

Fast forward to baby #2 and a three month period where it see med like me and my kiddos came down with every flu, cold, etc. under the sun. It was bad. No fun. It ended with a flu and diarrhea that left my poor little ones with awful diaper rash. It was so time consuming wringing out wet wipes so they wouldn’t burn their little bums.

Around this time, I read a post by Carisa (who hosts the fabulous Tot School as well as other fun sites). She has a darling little girl just a few months older than Cort. For her daughter she decided to go cloth. Carisa wrote a fantastic post about her first year of cloth diapering giving oodles of great advice for newbies like me. Now cloth diapering intrigues me for a “go green” and financial stand point. Not sure if I am ready to jump on that boat quite yet, though.

But back to the cloth wet wipes. These seemed ideal since I was washing soap out of wet wipes for every diaper change. In fact, my mom recommended just using soft wash clothes to clean their bums when they had diaper rash.

Carisa recommended these cloth wipes from BabyKicks and the wipes solution from Squishy Tushy.

I was ambitious that day and got on and ordered what I needed to make wipes solution. It was so simple! Squishy Tushy had excellent service and the shipping was pretty fast.

My excitement to try something new waned and my little container of wipe solution cubes sat on my counter top for about a month.

Enter Tackle it Tuesday.

My wipes supplies

I saw my little container of wipe solution cubes and thought, “why not!” A few weeks ago I had bought a big spray bottle. Now I was just missing the wipes. I browsed several cloth diapering sites and saw that many people made their own. Why not? I found a stained t-shirt that I was going to throw out and decided to repurpose it. I cut it into squares and was ready to go.

The container for the the wipe solution said that it was fast and fuss-free. Boy were they right! All I had to do was dissolve one cube in 2 cups of warm water. I bottled it in my spray bottle and was ready to go for my first diaper change. What I love is that the solution is made of natural, gentle ingredients and it smelled good, too!

Now for a pretty important part – what to do with the wipes after the diaper change. For now I am using an old cookie bucket. All you experts out there – is it better to do a dry or a wet bucket? I followed advice and sprinkled baking soda in so it didn’t get too stinky. How do you wash the wipes? As their own load? Questions, questions.

We’ll see how it goes. Round 1 of cloth wipes was a success. Maybe I’ll even try cloth diapers eventually. What are everyone’s favorites?
