My music style could be called eclectic at best as I grew up dancing to bluegrass and singing along to Les Mis. A year of piano, a year of the flute, and several years of choirs and musicals contributed to my musical upbringing. As a little girl I remember loving to sing Christmas hymns with my mom at the piano or listen to my grandmother playing the organ every Sunday morning. I still have a musical itch to learn to play the piano myself, but that is for another season.

Until then, I am uber excited to enroll Lily in Let’s Play music classes at Brigham Larson Pianos in Pleasant Grove.

. The amazing Karmel Larson, who I met through American Mothers Inc., teaches the classes and I just couldn’t wait to get Lily into a demo this summer to see how she would like it.

Lily was enthralled at getting to go to a music class in a real music store. She had never seen so many pianos! Her music lesson was 45 minutes long and she had the biggest smile on her face. I observed and loved how seamlessly the “facts” of music were woven into the fun the teacher and children were having. Here’s a little sample of what the class looked like:

Every class begins the same way. Introductions are done using a minor third pattern. Sounds technical to music novices like me, but rest assured it all looks like fun! I loved following along with what the children were technically learning as they appeared to be playing.
Lily loved using the tone bells to sing a new tune that Mrs. Karmel taught her. I loved that she was learning to recognize pitches and sing in tune.
Each segment of the class takes place in one of three rooms in the piano studio. This keeps the children engaged and moving. Mrs. Karmel led the way with a tambourine and the children kept a pretty good beat marching through all the gorgeous pianos.

For this activity, the children were learning ascending and descending pitches through full body movement. They also placed their own notes on the staff determining if Mrs. Karmel would sing high or low. Mrs. Karmel’s high notes were pretty impressive and the kiddos gave her lots of opportunity to practice them.

Lily thought it was so cool that she was able to play the primary chord song with Mrs. Karmel. Love how hands on these classes are.

Isn’t that puppet darling? His name is Echo Ed and he was teaching the children rhythmic imitation.
The magical lamp puppet show was one of my favorite parts of the class. Lily was entranced the entire time. The actions perfectly followed the music and helped even me to notice the different in each instrument’s tone. It will be fun to see how classical music activities enhance Lily’s listening skills.
One of the aspects of the classes that I am most drawn to is how active it is. The children are constantly engaged both physically and mentally. I know that movement is important to how children learn and I am excited to see it incorporated into musical training. Mrs. Karmel is so energetic as well as knowledgeable that I know Lily is going to love her as a teacher.
Can you believe that they did all of that in under 45 minutes? I was so impressed.

If you are interested in a demo class, you can get more information at Brigham’s School of Music Blog.

Classes begin in August when school starts back up so be sure to sign up soon if you are interested. I can’t wait for Lily to start!

It is so wonderful that my daughter, Karmel, will now share her love , her talents ,and her wisdom with more children than her own! As a homeschooling mom, friends and relatives who know of her abilities have often commented how they wish she could teach their kids…..now she has made that possible with teaching the gift of music to all who wish to take advantage of her talents! I can't see why in a few short years, when the word is out…that Karmel won't probably have a waiting list for openings a year out for youth wanting to be taught by the BEST, MY KARMEL! To know her, is to truly love her!

I was wondering if Let’s Play Music has been a positive experience for your family? I am thinking of enrolling my child.
