Plugfones – ear plugs and music!

At the Parker house, blogging is a family affair. As a blogger, I am on the lookout for opportunities, products, and activities that will improve the life of my family. I work 12 hour manufacturing shifts where I am required to use hearing protection, but I also like to listen to music or audio books. When my wife told me she had new ear plugs that would allow me to also listen to my music, I was eager to try them and compare them to what I currently use.

My work requires that the hearing protection we use has a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 20 db. The yellow silicone Plugfones have exceeded that requirement with a NRR of 25 db. Following is a list I compiled while wearing the yellow silicone Plugfones for three weeks on 12 hour shifts:

The ear buds are soft and comfortable when placed in the recommended way.  I tried out a different way than was suggested and it irritated my ear.  I encountered the same thing when removing the ear bud … painful when not done right. When I was wearing them correctly, they stayed in comfortably for my entire shift. The Plugfones didn’t get in my way and I had no problems with them falling out.

Plugfones do have a good noise reduction rating; however, if you turn your volume up too loud you can still cause hearing damage.  In order to avoid hearing loss by having the volume to loud, you can purchase Macks Ear Saver: Volume Limiter from Plugfones.  Basically it drops the volume by 18 db.

The sound quality is similar to other headphones at this price range and the cord is long enough to reach my phone or MP3 player in my pants pocket. One thing that may be problematic is that the silicone ear buds are non-replaceable.  However, you are able to replace foam ear buds which are awaiting testing for the Noise Reduction Rating.
