Emergency Preparedness for Families with Young Children

(Giveaway for 2 complete 72-hour kits, 1-month food supply, and 6-month food supply at bottom of the post!)

My heart sunk. Despite being warned repeatedly, I wasn’t prepared. I looked down at my three little ones – ages 4, 2, and 9 months – who depended on me for everything and quickly decided that we were going to do the earthquake drill another day. Pushing away the uncomfortable guilt, I began planning family meetings about emergency meeting points when a single thought stopped me in my tracks.

You don’t get a redo when a natural disaster happens.

At that moment, I knew that we had to do the Great Shake Out drill immediately. A real earthquake would not give me advance notice and then reschedule for a more convenient day. I turned up the radio so we could hear the emergency signal and let the reality of the drill sink in. I swooped up my baby and alerted my children to the sound of the signal. I had learned as a child what to do during an earthquake and now it was time to teach my little ones.

Drop. Cover. Hold On.

We huddled together under our dining room table and sang children’s songs until the signal ended. So far so good.

Drop, Cover, Hold On - Emergency Preparedness Tips for Families with Young Children

I gave myself a pat on the back for knowing what to do with my children for the initial earthquake, but then the reality of the aftermath set in.

72 hour kits

I easily found our 72-hour kits in the closet by the door. Pulling them out of the closet, I discovered a problem. Three small children, two large dufflebag 72-hour kits, and one mom meant we wouldn’t be getting very far. If our home was unsafe, I would have a major problem getting everything and everyone to safety.

If I hadn’t done the drill, I may not have made the obvious connection. Since then we have converted our 72-hour kits to backpacks, including back packs that the children can wear.

This experience opened my eyes to the reality of what could actually happen. I realized being prepared was more than having a 72-hour kit on hand. It was knowing what to do, where to go, how to help my children, etc. Here are five emergency preparedness tips that I hope will help families with small children.

1. Practice. Practice. Practice. Participate in your state’s Great Shake Out every April.  Have mini-drills with your children so that drop, cover, and hold on is ingrained in their minds!

2. Choose an area of preparedness to focus on every month. For example, purchase and fill your water barrels one month. The next month, put together kits for your car and work. Involve your children in the preparation.

3. Talk to your children about natural disasters and emergency preparedness in age-appropriate terms. The goal is to prepare, not scare! The Red Cross and Disney have put together a fun Disaster Preparedness Activity Book that you can print out and do with your children.

Disaster Preparedness Activity Book

4. Be prepared with identification. Make a key ring with a current picture of each member of your family on it. They are so easy – click on the link to make your own! Be sure to make one for each member of your family! Have a sharpie in each of your 72-hour kits as well so that you can write your names and emergency contact info on your arm in case you are separated.

5. Rotate your 72-hour kits every six months.  I rotate my 72 hour kits every April and October in between General Conference sessions.

With September being National Preparedness month and all the flooding in Arizona and reports of the unprecedented respiratory virus – I am definitely working on preparing my family better.

Now here is the fun part! I want to help YOU by better prepared! I have teamed up with my blogger pals and Nitro-Pak to giveaway a 2-person 72-hour kit, a 1-month food supply, and a six-month food supply. Three lucky winners! That will definitely give you a preparedness boost!

I have an emergency kit – just in case, but I think if we ever got an earthquake, I would panic. We just don’t get them here.

Jennifer Clay · September 9, 2014 at 10:42 am

I am totally not prepared. With three children, I need to be. I am going to set up a plan and get a kit ready as well. And I like the whole backpack idea.

Marya · September 9, 2014 at 10:47 am

I don’t have my kit yet either. I know I should, just like you. But I just don’t. Hopefully before winter. We had such a bad ice storm and no power for 3 days last winter – that could happen again!

Tracie · September 9, 2014 at 10:59 am

These are great tips!! We live in a hurricane-prone area, so emergency preparedness is yearly thing for us.

Debbie Denny · September 9, 2014 at 11:04 am

We have had several quakes in the last few years. We have a backpack set up for tornado prep as well. this kit looks very handy with all the essentials.

I need to update our emergency kit, after 9/11 we bought a kit and then have used items in it periodically thus leaving us with half empty kit.

Becky @ lovetobeinthekitchen · September 9, 2014 at 11:13 am

Thanks for this post! I need to keep up on this and practice with my kids.

Teresa McCluskey · September 9, 2014 at 11:33 am

We have never had a disaster but I do need to come up with a plan!

Jan LeBaron · September 9, 2014 at 11:38 am

I especially thought the idea of using a sharpie to write your info on the arm was a great idea. Also, I’ll be asking each of my kids to download the Disney Prep booklet for their children. I always have to update our medications and make certain that I’ve got food and water for our pets. But, I realized, after reading this, that I could have grandchildren at my home during an emergency and need to add that to my prep plans. Thanks for this great reminder!

Natalie @ Let's Get Together · September 9, 2014 at 11:39 am

Wow! Never thought of needing everything to be really easy to transport. So glad I read this. Thanks!!

Kungphoo · September 9, 2014 at 11:50 am

I needed this post.. in case of emergency we are not so ready. Maybe we need one of these kits..

Misty Battle · September 9, 2014 at 11:52 am

Living in South West Florida we have to be prepared. We have hurricanes looking to knock us down every time we turn around. This is a great post. Everyone needs to have things they need just in case.

Laurel · September 9, 2014 at 11:59 am

Great article! Living in Utah, we are WAY overdue for an earthquake and I hate to admit, my family is definitely not prepared. We have talked about how we “should” prepare but haven’t actually done it. Thanks for the reminder! I’d hate to be in the situation and wish I would have… Time to get some plans put into action! Great idea with the key chains and sharpie too. Scary to think about, but best to be prepared

MryJhnsn (@mryjhnsn) · September 9, 2014 at 12:16 pm

I am so not prepared

Leila · September 9, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Wow. Your post really hit home for me. I have massive anxiety and one of my irrational fears (prior to seeking help) was that what happened if we (I live in Arizona) flooded. I needed to carry around life jackets at all times because I could not realistically save myself and my 3 young children should a flood arise and we had to float/swim. It was an irrational fear for a long time so having a preparedness kit hasn’t crossed my mind because I have moved past that irrational fear. Yesterday, there was massive flooding but it didn’t bring back my fear, but reading your post definitely reminded me that things could happen. I think I’m going to work on getting a 72 hour kit available in our home. You never know when something could happen!

Lexie Lane · September 9, 2014 at 1:41 pm

We have random earthquakes here. we could never be too careful. My 3 year old is who I worry about most. So I completely get ya. What a great post. Definitely a lot to think about.

Shary · September 9, 2014 at 2:14 pm

I live in Florida, home of the hurricanes forever. I’ve recently moved to central Florida so weather isn’t as scary here, but still… hurricanes forever. Thanks for all these great tips.

ourfamilyworld · September 9, 2014 at 2:23 pm

I have an emergency kit but I need to update it.

Tamika · September 9, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Great post! Everyone, should prepare for a natural disaster. The emergency kits, I have one for me and my spouse, dog, cat and grandkids. I hope I won’t have to use it, but if I do; it’s ready.

Trisha · September 9, 2014 at 3:31 pm

We don’t have an emergency kit but we SHOULD have one. After reading this, I will definitely prepare one. I think it’s great that there are resources out there for children lie the Disaster Preparedness Activity Book !

Harriet · September 9, 2014 at 3:49 pm

I live in the Midwest and we’ve actually had a few earthquakes. Good info.

Leisha · September 9, 2014 at 4:11 pm

Such good reminders to be prepared. I definitely need an update to everything I have in our 72 hour kits.

Tonya C · September 9, 2014 at 4:20 pm

Fantastic info! My hubby and I have just begun to prep for an emergency. Thanks for sharing these tips and giveaway! Pinning this as a reminder!

Mama to 5 BLessings · September 9, 2014 at 4:41 pm

Looks like a great product! We do not have earthquakes here but we have hurricanes. I need to check this kit out!

amy · September 9, 2014 at 4:54 pm

Wow, this is such a great post and giveaway! I needed to start thinking about this! THANKS!

Heathe Lawrence · September 9, 2014 at 4:57 pm

We are sadly not prepared.
We have tons of food but there isn’t a bottle of water in this house anywhere!
We have a first aid kit but I am sure all of the bandaids have disappeared onto my 3 year olds imaginary boo boos. Thanks for the reminder to get this house in shape before the snow flies and the “real” fun begins!
Time to get some batteries, candles and bottled water!

Dawn · September 9, 2014 at 5:43 pm

I think it is always good to have a safety plan in the event of an emergency. My family and I try to be as prepared as we can be! You can never be too safe!

Xiomeeks · September 9, 2014 at 6:57 pm

While we may not experience earthquakes in Florida, we definitively can experience hurricanes and power outages. Every summer I start stocking up on emergency foods and batteries just in case.

Kori · September 9, 2014 at 7:37 pm

I don’t think you can ever be too prepared for any emergency. I remember earthquake safety drills as a child, when I lived in California. We always had to have a Ziploc baggie filled with non-perishable snacks, mini-first aid kit, medicines, etc.

Giveaways 4 Mom · September 9, 2014 at 8:08 pm

These are some great tips. I especially love the information you provide on 72 hour kits.

Debi - Travel Blogger · September 9, 2014 at 8:09 pm

What an awesome giveaway and an awesome post. It’s so important to be prepared in a disaster or emergency situation. Great post!

Emily · September 9, 2014 at 8:10 pm

These kits are so neat. There is so much you have to think about after a natural disaster and knowing this kit is already there is priceless.

Amanda · September 9, 2014 at 8:44 pm

The most I am prepared for is the power going out for a short time! I need to make sure we are more prepared!

Gladys Parker · September 9, 2014 at 8:46 pm

I always kindof blew them emergency things off until I became the grandma. Now I see the importance.

Elizabeth Copeland · September 9, 2014 at 8:49 pm

We’ve been through an earthquake, fortunately no major damage. In general, we try to keep needed supplies on hand, within the budget.

Liz Mays · September 9, 2014 at 8:51 pm

As rare as the situations might be, we’d be so grateful for the preparedness if a disaster struck. Great idea to have a kit like this.

Maggie · September 9, 2014 at 8:56 pm

We don’t have earthquakes here but we do have tornados! We do have an emergency kit!

Kristin · September 9, 2014 at 9:16 pm

Living in hurricane land, we definitely need to get a plan nailed down!

Jaime Nicole · September 9, 2014 at 9:16 pm

I would say Arizona doesn’t have a lot of natural disasters but we did have major flooding yesterday. Ha. I am a closet Doomsday Prepper and Totally want this!

Wendy @ ABCs and Garden Peas · September 9, 2014 at 9:17 pm

Natural disasters are one of my biggest fears, I guess because they’re just so big and powerful. I live in PA, so we get the occasional tornado, hurricane or flood. Luckily, I haven’t had to experience anything too bad.

Lois Alter Mark · September 9, 2014 at 9:23 pm

I realized last time we had a power outage for 12 hours that I was totally unprepared. Have I done anything about it since then? No! Thank you for the push. Getting on this now!

Ann Bacciaglia · September 9, 2014 at 10:41 pm

Very important tips to talk about with the family as you never know when a disaster will happen. I love the Minnie Mouse book. What a great think to show the kids,

Eliz Frank · September 10, 2014 at 2:38 am

Hopefully, you’ll never have to run for cover in real life, but it’s very important to be prepared. Smart move.

Debbie L. · September 10, 2014 at 4:36 am

Living in Wisconsin – cold/snowy/ice weather is one of our major reasons we need to be prepared. We can lose power for days – being prepared is key. Entering the giveaway – thanks.

Milena · September 10, 2014 at 4:56 am

I have never part of a natural disaster and no I’m not prepared at all. Thanks for the reminder.

sojourner · September 10, 2014 at 7:39 am

Eek, scary. I thought about this a lot during Hurricane Sandy. Luckily, earth quakes aren’t very likely here in New York, but hurricanes now are becoming a reality. Thanks for sharing the information. We have no safety/emergency plan, but definitely need to develop one. You just never know.

Mom @ FamiGami · September 10, 2014 at 7:43 am

That kit looks amazing! We actually aren’t prepared in any way – LOL – so I guess it’s something to consider buying!

Janeane Davis · September 10, 2014 at 8:40 am

This post was very good. Most people are like you and prepare the emergency kits, but not ones that are packed for the family including kids to be able to pick up and go. This was very good advice.

Teresa McCluskey · September 10, 2014 at 8:58 am

We love mickie and minnie! Huge fans! I think this is a great idea though!

Diana @ Nanny to Mommy · September 10, 2014 at 10:34 am

Thanks for the tips! And the giveaway!

Janeane Davis · September 10, 2014 at 12:07 pm

It is important to prepare for emergencies when things are calm and quiet. It is also important to get children involved with the plan so they are prepared for emergencies when they occur.

Rena (An Ordinary Housewife) · September 10, 2014 at 12:33 pm

We don’t get earthquakes here, but I guess every area has a natural disaster they’re prone to and it’s always good to be prepared.

Francisca Ramos · September 10, 2014 at 12:35 pm

This giveaway is great. My kids are so clumsy they hurt either by falling down or playing. The safety kit would come real handy for my kids.

katrina g · September 10, 2014 at 1:14 pm

great tips. it’s always great to have a plan just in case

Rosey · September 10, 2014 at 1:56 pm

I have sometimes wondered if there is a way to prepare for an earthquake. WE don’t get them here, but we get our fair share of inclement weather to make up for it.

Yona Williams · September 10, 2014 at 6:27 pm

I am not prepared for a natural disaster because we don’t live in a region where super-extreme weather happens. We have a really bad blizzard once in a blue moon, and we tend to concentrate our emergency preparedness for the car rather than for the house. Getting stuck in the snow, ice, or cold weather is our threat.

Lisa · September 11, 2014 at 8:03 am

I need to get one of these kits!

Ashley @ Love.Marriage.Baby · September 11, 2014 at 1:47 pm

We live in Alaska right now but we’re moving to California once my hubby and I are both out of the Army. We’ll definitely have to invest in these kits and practice emergency drills with the kids! Thanks for sharing this!

Claire · September 12, 2014 at 6:55 am

Oh I’m so glad not to live in a earthquake prone area, although we get tornados which may be worse! Definitely a good idea to practice drills and have supplies on hand in case of emergency!
